September is officially Pediatric Cancer Awareness month! We want to spread the word!
Why is there a Pediatric Cancer Awareness month?
Because...
- Every day, 42 children are diagnosed with cancer
- More than 40,000 children receive cancer treatment every year
- 1 out of 8 children with cancer will not survive
- During the last 25 years only 2 drugs have been developed just for children's cancer
- Children are given drugs designed for adults, and 3 of 5 cancer survivors often develop complications later in life including infertility, heart problems, secondary cancers and many others.
But there is hope!
- During the past 25 years (thanks in great part to CureSearch), overall children's cancer cure rates have increased from 40% to 80%
- Clinical Trials have increased cure rates and continue to save lives
- Advances in genomics are leading the way toward new and innovative treatments for children with cancer
But all of this research takes money!
- Less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget is directed to childhood cancer research
- Children's cancer research is almost entirely privately funded by donations to groups such as St. Baldricks Foundation and CureSearch
